How to create labels in Jira?

August 29, 2025

Here is how to create a label in Jira:

  1. Open any work item in your Jira project.
  2. Navigate to the Labels field on the right side of the screen or simply use the keyword shortcut “L”.
  3. Choose any of the suggested labels, if created earlier. Or start typing the label name to create a new one.

 How to manage Jira labels:

  • Editing and removing labels: to remove a label from an issue, simply click the 'x' next to the label name.
  • Bulk changes: Jira's "Bulk Change" feature allows you to add, remove, or replace labels on multiple issues simultaneously, which can be a significant time-saver.
  • No centralized management: it's important to note that labels don't have a dedicated administrative section. A label exists as long as it's associated with at least one issue. Once a label is removed from all issues, it will eventually disappear from the auto-suggest list.

Why use labels in Jira?

One of the primary benefits of using labels is the ability to quickly find and group related issues. You can leverage labels in your searches in several ways:

  • Basic search: in Jira's basic search interface, you can filter issues by selecting one or more labels from a dropdown list.
  • Jira Query Language (JQL): for more advanced searches, you can use JQL. For instance, the query labels = "marketing" will return all issues with that specific label.
  • Clickable labels: within an issue view, you can click on a label to navigate to the Issue Navigator, which will display all other issues that share the same label.
